Airforms, Inc. Awarded FAA PMA Approval for C208/208B Crew Ladder Components

#     #     #

WASILLA, ALASKA, 22-July-2020– Airforms, Inc. announced today they have been awarded FAA PMA approvals for a number of the components for the C208/208B Crew Ladder Assembly.  According to company officials, the approved parts include left hand & right hand Upper and Lower Arm Assembles, Upper and Lower Step Assemblies, Bracket Assemblies, Spacers and even replacement tread for the steps.  The Airforms components are direct replacements for the OEM parts, and are interchangeable with the parts in the original ladder assemblies

Airforms has long been known for engineering products that provide a superior service life, and this is also true for the crew ladder components.  Company officials explain that aluminum components are primed for finish coat paint, which also eliminates exposure to moisture and prevents corrosion.  In addition, Airforms designed the ladder arm pivot points with bushings made from a non-corroding alloy to prevent the intergranular corrosion that is caused by contact between dissimilar metals and the introduction of moisture.  The result is superior corrosion protection and longer lasting components.

All of the crew ladder components are value priced at a fraction of the cost of their OEM counterparts, and are in stock and ready to ship.

Airforms, Inc. Awarded FAA STC Approval for GA-8 Airvan Main Gear Gravel Deflectors

WASILLA, ALASKA, 23-May-19– Airforms, Inc. announced today they have been awarded FAA STC Number SA02518 approving installation of Airforms Part Numbers AF32362-1 and AF32362-2 Main Gear Gravel Deflectors on all serial numbers of the GA8 & GA8-TC320 Airvan.  The left hand and right hand gravel deflectors are designed to prevent foreign object damage on the rear of the airframe.

“Aircraft that operate out of unimproved airfields have always run an increased risk of damage to the rear sections of the airframe due to gravel and stones being kicked up from the tires of the main landing gear, and impacting the lower fuselage and the empennage of the aircraft”, said Steve Hunter, Sales and Marketing Executive for Airforms.  “Our Gravel Deflectors are engineered to provide a long service life while protecting the airframe from this threat.”

Each gravel deflector has a high strength steel frame for durability, and is powder coated to prevent corrosion.  The “mudflap” is made from 2-ply, nylon reinforced rubber, and all attachment hardware is included.  The installation utilizes existing attachment points, so no drilling is required.

Airforms includes one STC free of charge with the purchase of one pair of gravel deflectors (1 each P/N AF32362-1 & AF32362-2).

Airforms, Inc. awarded new FAA PMA Approvals Cessna 208/208B Door Hinge Halves

WASILLA, ALASKA, 25-February-2019 – Adding to their growing list of FAA Approved products available in support of the world’s Cessna Caravan fleets, Airforms, Inc. has announced FAA PMA Approval for door hinge halves for Cessna 208 & 208B aircraft.  The hinges are approved in two configurations – standard hinge halves and hinge halves with replaceable bushings installed.

Airforms’ Steve Hunter explains, “As the original equipment hinge halves wear and the aircraft door starts to sag, Cessna Service Bulletin CAB96-2 allows a one-time repair through the use of an oversize door hinge pin.  When the hinge again becomes worn and the door sags, the hinge halves must be replaced and an original size hinge pin re-installed.  Our standard hinge halves are direct replacements for the OEM parts at a fraction of the cost of OEM replacements.  For those that wish to take a different route and reduce the incidence of replacement of hinge halves, we have developed hinge halves with bushings installed.  This allows the bushing to wear – not the hinge.  Over time as the bushings wear and the door again starts to sag, the bushings can be replaced to restore proper door alignment.  This allows for multiple repairs over time, greatly reducing costs for the operator.”

Airforms bushed hinge halves are also direct replacements for the OEM hinges.  Both standard and bushed hinge halves are available in nine part numbers.  Airforms also offers two part numbers of FAA PMA Approved bushings that cover the replacement of bushings in the hinge halves.

Airforms is the world’s leading supplier of replacement engine baffles for a wide range of general aviation aircraft; products also include an expanding line of turboprop aircraft PMA parts, STCs, and hard to source parts for fleet operators.  Airforms maintains an FAA approved manufacturing system for PMA parts, supported by an in-house engineering department.

Airforms, Inc. Awarded FAA PMA Approval for Cessna 206/207/210 Engine Mount Heat Shields

WASILLA, ALASKA, 3-May-18– Airforms, Inc. announced today they have been awarded FAA PMA approval for engine mount isolator heat shields for the Cessna C206/207/210 family of aircraft (Continental powered).  The aluminum construction of the heat shields absorbs less heat than steel, and a cerakote coating on one side inhibits heat transfer to the flexible isolators.

According to company officials there is a sizeable fleet of 1986 and prior Cessna 206’s as well as 207’s and 210’s that increasingly benefit from additional aftermarket PMA support. They further state that these new heat shields are an affordable replacement for the heat shields on these aircraft, and provide a high level of heat protection, extending the service life of the engine mount isolators at a great price.

The heat shield– part number AF1250918-2 – is a direct replacement for Cessna part number 1250918-2, and there are four per aircraft.  The shields can be purchased separately, or at a discounted price if all four are purchased in a kit.

Airforms, Inc. awarded new FAA STC approval for Cessna 208/208B Passenger Airstair Step

WASILLA, ALASKA, 5-April-2018 – Adding to their growing list of FAA Approved products available in support of the world’s Cessna Caravan fleets, Airforms, Inc. has announced FAA STC approval for part number AF2617076-1.  This component is a step approved to replace any one of the three Cessna steps in the passenger airstair door on both the C208 & C208B models.  The step is a direct replacements for Cessna P/N’s 2617076-1, 2617076-10 or 2617076-11.  Airforms step is engineered for increased longevity and is constructed solely from aluminum to eliminate the incidence of delaminating operators experience with the OEM steps.

Airforms’ Engineer Robert Ray explains, “We have been in contact with a number of Caravan fleet operators that for some time have struggled with the need for frequent replacement of the steps on the passenger airstair door, and they have requested a solution.  Our new Passenger Step is of all aluminum construction and can withstand significantly more weight than the original, is more resilient to weather, and will have a longer service life – at a price point that provides real value in the industry.  In addition, having a single part number that can replace any one of the three OEM part numbers allows operators to keep their spares inventory cost in check.”

Airforms, Inc. awarded new FAA STC approval For C208/208B Nose Gear/ Torque Link Repair Procedures

BIG LAKE, ALASKA, 28-Mar-2016 – As part of its continuing mission to support the worldwide fleet of Cessna Caravan family aircraft, Airforms, Inc. has obtained FAA STC approval for procedures that provide repairs to worn Nose Gear Torque Links and Nose Gear Shock Struts, and replacement of their respective attaching parts with FAA PMA’d oversize components.
“As the torque link joints loosen over time the nose gear is prone to shimmy, especially when operating the larger diameter nose wheel,” said Lee Budde, President of Airforms, Inc. “This STC acknowledges the fact that wear is going to happen over the life of the gear, but by providing oversized pins and a carefully designed set of tools, wear can be removed incrementally to keep the nose gear operating like new. Unlike other options for nose gear maintenance that require the entire nose gear be removed and sent off to be repaired by a repair station, this STC allows the gear to remain on the aircraft and the specialized tool kit allows the wear points to be reamed to exact sizes, even in the field.”

Highlights of the STC include:

  • Oversized FAA PMA’d pins & bolts available in .010, .020 and .030 oversizes
  • Standard sized pins & bolts also available
  • FAA STC sold separately
  • Precision machined pins and bolts are Cad plated for long life
  • Tool kits available with piloted reamers for all 3 oversizes

Airforms, Inc. Engineering Supports DHC-2 Beaver Operators – Provides DER approved data for alteration of crew seats in response to FAA safety alert letter

Just in time for the upcoming float season, Airforms, Inc. Engineering has announced that it will be supporting DHC-2 aircraft operators with FAA/DER approved crew seat modification and installation data.  The crew seat modification data and DER approval available from Airforms addresses popular field modifications that may have been previously performed; the data also supports new modifications to eligible aircraft.

The Airforms modification data specifies addition of a folding back assembly to certain pilot and copilot seats.  The folding back installation on the crew seat allows for better visibility for passengers in the aft cabin, and increases the ease of aft egress for the crew.

“We are pleased to provide a timely response for operators heading out for the season,” said Kyle Taylor, Chief Engineer. “In this case, the FAA notified operators late last year of a potential airworthiness discrepancy related to the configuration of modified seats in the field, specifically that some of these seat modifications may have been performed without approved data.  This left operators in a grey zone wondering about the airworthiness status of their aircraft.  We were able to work with two renowned maintainers of this aircraft type and the FAA to develop a straight forward, on-time and cost effective solution.  We help aircraft operators, owners and maintainers with a wide range of DER approved repair and alteration services – this most recent Beaver seat project is just one of those examples.”

In addition to their FAA DER engineering services, Airforms is the world’s leading supplier of replacement engine baffles for a wide range of general aviation aircraft; products also include an expanding line of turboprop aircraft PMA parts, STCs, and hard to source parts for fleet operators.  Airforms maintains an FAA approved manufacturing system for PMA parts.

Airforms’ Engineering launches 2015 presentation: Using DERs for Major Repairs and Alterations

A preferred provider of aeronautical engineering services for airlines and private operators, Airforms’ engineering group is announcing completion of a presentation titled “Using DERs for Major Repairs and Alterations.”  This presentation, available on the newsfeed at our website www.airforms.biz, outlines how aircraft owners, operators and maintainers can take advantage of the FAA Designated Engineering Representative (DER) system in support of improved safety and reduced operating cost.

“We are pleased to offer this presentation as part of our effort to have a positive impact on the aviation community.  Our goal is simple: to improve safety and reduce operational cost when it comes to flying airplanes,” said Kyle Taylor, Chief Engineer, “the FAA DER system is generally underutilized in our community because of perceived obscurity, high cost and administrative burden – we are seeking to share our knowledge of the FAA system to dissolve some of these misperceptions.  Using a DER for major repairs and alterations often makes economical and practical sense, especially considering our aging fleet.”

The presentation was prepared in support of a 2015 speaking tour, including recent IA renewal seminars in Des Moines, IA and Milwaukee, WI.  Upcoming speaking dates include February 24 and 25 at the Alaska Air Carriers Association annual trade show in Anchorage, AK, and March 30th at the Minnesota AMT Conference in Minneapolis MN.  Additional dates will be announced throughout the year.
